What is Full Coverage Dental Insurance?

You have to be very careful when shopping for any type of insurance. Certain terms are often used that can be confusing and often misleading. What does "full coverage" sound to you? When I first hear "full" I think everything. In this situation, it may imply that you get all the insurance you need. Unfortunately, that's not the case.

Is it a marketing ploy? Maybe. You are looking to get all the insurance you need so getting full coverage dental insurance should be good, right? If you just assume that full coverage gives you all you need, you could be without the right amount of insurance for you.

Everyone is different therefore everyone needs different amounts of coverage. A family of 5 is going to need more coverage than a single person who has yet to have a cavity. Of course, you could probably decrease the amount of coverage you needed if you were able to care for your teeth in such a way that you never had cavities or problems, but that's not always so easy.

Full coverage dental insurance is actually just your basic insurance package. There are no bells and whistles, it's just the minimum coverage you need. Most people don't just want the minimum. The minimum probably won't give you all that you need.

How to get More than just Full Coverage Dental Insurance

You can start with a basic full coverage plan, but then you need to specialize for you. Do you already have a plan for dental insurance? If you have a health insurance plan with your employer and there is dental insurance included, it may or may not be all the coverage you need. If it is not, you will probably need supplemental dental insurance.

If you have no dental insurance, of course you will need to get a whole new plan. If you have dental insurance that you pay for outside of your employer, you may need to reorganize your plan, or if it won't work, you'll need to get a new plan.

Shop around for a good plan. You need to work with a company that has your needs in mind. Most companies will probably have some type of full coverage dental insurance, but again, you will need to build that plan up to what you need. For example, you need to figure out what you will need for yourself, your family and kids if you have one, and you will need to keep in mind what your spouse may have in dental coverage as well.

It is important that you get a good dental coverage plan. Dental insurance can make ordinarily expensive health care more affordable. Some people never see the dentist simply because they can't afford it. That is how insurance works; it helps you to afford what you normally couldn't by paying periodic premiums.

Don't hesitate to get good coverage. If you go without ever going to the dentist, you could risk a lot of damage to your teeth. When a cavity goes untouched it just gets worst.

Overall, don't get too hung up on the "full coverage" aspect. Also, don't let it fool you into thinking you have all you need. Take a little time to build up the policy you need and that is right for you and your family. It could be the difference between having beautiful teeth and skimping on coverage and paying too much.
